What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are simple, but with a few fun twists.
- Correctly positioned letters that are part of the Wordle answer turn green.
- Letters in the answer but in the wrong position become yellow.
- Letters not in the answer turn gray.
- There will never be a plural answer.
- You can have repeating letters, so if you guess a word with two of the same letter, both may turn green, both yellow, or one green and one yellow.
- Every guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. For example, ABCDE is not a valid guess.
- Unless you’re playing on Hard mode, there’s no requirement to use previously guessed letters in your next tries.
- You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
- You must finish the daily Wordle by midnight in your local time zone.
- All Wordle answers come from a list of 2,309 possible solutions, but up to 10,000 words can be used as guesses. For example, while “WORDS” is an acceptable guess, it’s probably not the Wordle answer today.

How to play NYT Wordle?
Once you understand the strategies and tips, Wordle becomes an easy game to play and win. Let’s start with the basics of Wordle.
- To begin, type any five-letter word and see what happens. The goal of Wordle is to figure out the correct five-letter word.
- After entering your first guess, the letters will be color-coded. Gray means the letter is not in the Wordle answer today, yellow means the letter is in the word but in the wrong position, and green means both the letter and its position are correct.
- Keep guessing five-letter words, adjusting your choices based on the colors. But be careful—you only have six guesses to get the right word!
- If you guess correctly, congratulations! After your sixth guess, the correct word will be revealed if you haven’t solved it yet.
The toughest part of Wordle is figuring out the right five-letter words, which can be challenging at times. You’ll need to pinpoint specific letters within the five-letter words to win. If this feels tricky, consider using a Wordle word finder. This tool helps by showing you five-letter words with the specific letters you need, or even allowing you to exclude certain letters. It’s a great help if you want to win Wordle!

how to win at Wordle?
Using one of the best Wordle start words is the most important piece of advice I can give. It makes a significant difference, and I cannot stress this enough.
Without a strong starting word, you may feel like you’re guessing blindly among the 26 letters to discover the correct five-letter word—or possibly fewer. However, the best starting words have been identified by experts using both Wordle answer frequency and English language patterns. So, make sure to use them!
Next, focus on common letter combinations, especially at the beginning or end of words. For example, SH, ST, CR, and CH are common pairs, though some are more frequent than others.
Vowels are also crucial. While not every Wordle answer contains multiple vowels, many do, and some even have three. If vowels don’t appear in your guesses, try a few more on your next attempt. A good Wordle start word should include a couple of vowels. Additionally, remember the letter Y, which often substitutes for a vowel and frequently appears at the end of words.
Finally, experiment with different possibilities. You can try various guesses to see how they fit before hitting “Enter.” Enter the most likely letters and any that you’re sure belong in the word, then mentally switch between options. This technique is especially helpful when the word isn’t immediately obvious (like FJORD or ISLET).
We also offer plenty of Wordle hints and strategies, including how we’ve analyzed past Wordle answers to spot patterns and provide additional guidance for today’s Wordle answer.
What is a Wordle start word?
Since they play a key role in achieving a high score in Wordle, you’ll often hear about “start words.” While not everyone uses one, the general idea is that by selecting a statistically optimal word, you can quickly narrow down the possible solutions from the very first guess.
Before you begin, check out my list of the best Wordle start words. I’ve shared plenty of analysis on this topic to help you improve your game.

- Windows: use CTRL+F

Find out more about Wordle
To keep your winning streak going, you must identify the secret five-letter word hidden in each of the six rows of boxes Wordle gives you daily.
Start with a strong word like ARISE or another that balances vowels and common consonants. Avoid starting with words that have repeating letters, as this could waste valuable opportunities to rule out or confirm letters. After pressing Enter, the colors will guide you: ⬛️ means the letter isn’t in the word, 🟨 means the letter is in the word but not in that spot, and 🟩 means the letter is correct and in the right position.
For your second guess, use a good word that complements your first guess, covering any common letters you may have missed. If you’re lucky, the colored squares will give you helpful clues.
From there, focus your guesses based on what you’ve learned. You have six tries and must use real words—you can’t just fill in random letters like EEEEE. Also, keep in mind that letters may repeat (e.g., BOOKS).
