best barbarian build bg3 introduction
In Best Barbarian Build Bg3, the Barbarian is a cloth-wearing, melee-aggressive damage dealer. Thanks to the Extra Sneak Attack feature gained at level 5, the class excels in melee combat, especially with two-handed weapons. The Berserker subclass, which offers enhanced bonus action utility and range, is ideal for this build. The ability to shock or knock enemies prone while throwing objects with a bonus action sets the Berserker Barbarian apart. If you embrace this aggressive playstyle, expect even more utility and struggle.

The drawback of the Best Barbarian Build Bg3 Berserker is that Rage is triggered by clothing rather than heavy armor. This core feature grants the class its bonus action benefits, so don’t expect to see fancy armor like a Paladin. However, the straightforward and enjoyable aggressive playstyle remains, even without relying on bolstered magic casting.

Best Companions for Berserker bg3 barbarian build
Our recommendation for the best barbarian build bg3 avoids adding more front-line fighters and damage dealers. Your character should charge into melee range while dealing ranged damage, offering support, or using stealth attacks. Having two or three melee characters could create difficulties in close-quarters combat.
- Wizard Gale: Range magic damage, crowd control, area damage
- Cleric Shadowheart: Healing, crowd control, buffs
- Rogue Astarion: Range, burst damage, lockpicking,
When assembling your party for the best barbarian build bg3, consider allies for their external abilities and skills that influence dialogue, storytelling, and exploration, in addition to combat. A well-rounded group will satisfy the classic RPG “holy trinity” of Tank, Healer, and DPS. In Baldur’s Gate 3, aim for one melee DPS, one ranged DPS, one tank, and one healer. Experiment with various classes and subclasses to find the best fit, as some can cover multiple roles.
Best bg3 barbarian build Level Progression
First-level players aiming for the best barbarian build bg3 should use our character creator to select the ideal mix of race, background, skills, and abilities, with a focus on Strength and Constitution. Follow the mentioned character creation stages to hit the right ability scores and race. You should wear either medium armor or clothes, and a greatsword is the ideal two-handed weapon. A powerful one can be obtained during the Everburn Blade lesson.
Level 1

- Bg3 Barbarian Mechanics
- Unarmored Defense: Your Armor Class when you are not wearing any armor is 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Constitution modifier. You may benefit from this even if you wear a shield dwarf.
- Rage: When you’re raged you may toss objects, wield melee weapons, and inflict two more damage. In addition, you have an Advantage on Strength checks and Saving Throws, as well as Resistance to physical damage. If you don’t assault an enemy or receive damage every turn, rage stops early. Spells cannot be cast or concentrated upon when raged.
If you do not intend to wear medium armor, Unarmored Defense is a useful option for the best barbarian build bg3. However, Lae’zel’s armor can be removed and upgraded to a higher Armor Class (AC) by equipping it with high dexterity. The best barbarian gear bg3 sets benefit from using “clothing” rather than armor. As you progress, the game rewards you with clothing sets that increase melee damage and grant the Wrath status effect. There are pros and cons to taking risks—while you take more hits with lower AC, some gear sets deal incredibly strong damage. I recommend starting with Medium or higher AC and testing your level of survivability. If successful, move on to meta-clothing sets.
The main driving force of the bg3 barbarian build is rage. The first time you activate it, charge in and use a bonus action. To keep your ranged weapon active, make sure to equip it, allowing you to attack once per turn.
Best bg3 barbarian build Priorities | Valour Bard Gameplay
A two-handed greatsword is recommended for the deadly melee bg3 barbarian build. Early on, your main goal is to find a back-bar ranged weapon. The Heavy Crossbow or Longbow work excellently until you acquire armor that boosts movement, at which point your mobility may be restricted. Additionally, look for Hill Giant Strength Elixir and Accuracy Oil. When combined, these two items will give your bg3 barbarian a powerful edge, providing huge damage boosts right from the start.
bg3 best barbarian build Priorities is the following:
- Reached Hollowed City/Druid Grove
- Complete Prologue
- Sell, Finish quests, Stock up
- Recruit Companions such as: Gale, Shadowheart, Astarion priority
- Progress to level 5 for Bonus Attack
- Unlock respec companions, proper ability score or classes, Withers
- Get to Grymforge, Underdark
Level 2

You may access Dangerous Sense and Reckless Attack at level two. What they do is this:
- Reckless Attack: The Reckless Attack feature gives enemies the edge over you until your next turn in return for giving you the advantage on melee weapon attack rolls. Use this against a competitor you want to eliminate or who will not be your target in your next turn.
- Dangerous Sense: When making dexterity-saving throws against surfaces, spells, and traps, you have the upper hand. This is only a passive application to your character.
Your primary attack skill is Reckless Attack. When you have the edge, you can roll two dice instead of one, and the game will select the highest roll, greatly amplifying your damage. Keep in mind that the enemy will also have the same advantage over you.
At this point in the game, your primary objective is to use Rage as your bonus action during your first turn when charging into battle. To maximize the Rage effect, you need to either hit someone or be struck yourself. If you can’t reach a target on your first turn, ensure you have a bow equipped. Generally, focus on using Reckless Attack for your melee strikes.
Level 3
When you finally select a subclass at level three, we recommend Berserker. It grants you a powerful ranged damage ability and utilizes your bonus action effectively. With a Barbarian Build at level 3, you should focus on the following:
- Extra Rage Charge
- Frenzied Strike skill unlocked: Use your equipped weapon to launch a melee attack as a bonus action.
- Take Berserker Subclass
- Frenzy: grants you the ability to enter a frenzied rage as a bonus action, allowing you to make an additional melee weapon attack on each of your turns. Note that this feature also incurs one level of exhaustion once your rage ends.
- Enraged Throw skill unlocked: Throw anything at a target to deal Bludgeoning damage and knock it Prone. The amount of weight you can throw depends on your strength. More damage is dealt by heavier items. Thrown weapons do the same amount of damage that melee weapons do. In addition, the damage you deliver is increased by your Strength.
At level 3, the Barbarian starts to feel incredibly powerful. You can now strike with Frenzied Strike and Enraged Throw using your bonus actions. Ideally, you should activate Frenzy (Rage) on your first turn and charge into combat, either dealing damage at range or in melee. By your second turn, you should be able to use Frenzy again. You can then use your action to attack and your bonus action to attack once more. Expect even more attacks at levels 4 and 5!
Among the two new abilities, Enraged Throw stands out as my favorite since it can knock an enemy prone or stun them. The Barbarian’s main weakness isn’t damage but their lack of crowd control. This ability is key to making up for that gap. Use your action to attack, then follow up with Enraged Throw to stun an enemy even if they’re nearby. I carry multiple daggers and spears to throw and retrieve after combat.
Now, the game revolves around Frenzy, where you can rush in for a reckless attack and gain a bonus action on your first turn. After using your first action, Reckless, on the second turn, use your bonus action for Frenzied Strike or Enraged Throw. Keep in mind that using these bonus action attacks too often can break your Frenzy. Overusing Enraged Throw or Frenzied Strike every turn will knock you out of Frenzy, so try to use them sparingly. Later, with more bonus action options, this will be even more effective.
Level 4

Consider enhancing your ability improvements by putting two points into Strength and adding a feat. At level 4, aim to boost your Strength to 18. This will help you deal consistent damage. At this stage, we don’t recommend the Great Weapon Master feat. The reason is that the Berserker Subclass Barbarian relies heavily on their bonus actions, Frenzied Strike and Enraged Throw, to great effect. So, focus on a straightforward and effective stat boost to maximize your damage output.
Level 5

The Barbarian receives fast movement and additional attack at level five.
- Fast Movement: adds +5 to your movement speed while not wearing heavy armor.
- Extra Attack: enabling you to use the Attack action throughout your turn to launch two attacks. This greatly increases your fight damage potential.
Level 5 Barbarians shine when they combine Frenzied Strike and Extra Attack. This allows you to attack once with your regular action and once with your bonus action. To maximize damage and gain additional effects in a single turn, you can use a Potion of Speed. This combination boosts your combat effectiveness, enabling you to deal substantial damage and make the most out of your actions.
At this stage, the Barbarian truly starts to dominate. On your first turn, use your bonus action to activate Rage/Frenzy and make a Reckless Attack. If you land the hit, you’ll gain another attack. Typically, you’ll want to apply some bleeding damage with secondary weapon-based abilities like Lacerate. On your second turn, you can make two attacks—one with your regular action (Reckless) and the second with a bonus action strike, depending on range. That’s three attacks in a turn. To further enhance your damage output, use a Potion of Speed for two additional attacks, especially in tougher battles.
Level 6

You get an extra Rage charge and the subclass feature Mindless Rage when you reach level 6 of the Barbarian.
- Mindless Rage: Your fury overwhelms you and drives away extraneous influences. You can’t be scared or charmed when you’re frenzied, and calm emotions can’t make you stop being raged. This prevents you from taking damage or missing turns, and it also helps you grow immune to those bothersome crowd control effects. Apart from that, fighting remains essentially unchanged at this point.
Act 1 should be nearing completion by the time you reach Level 6. Be sure to visit vendors and stock up on supplies for both camp and alchemy. Additionally, take a moment to check out the best Act 1 items. This chapter also provides permanent bonuses that are too valuable to miss. Lastly, Grymforge is home to powerful Adamantine weapons and armor, which will serve you well all the way into Act 3. It’s highly recommended to gather Mithral, Mould, and Crafting items before advancing to Act 2, as you won’t be able to return later.
Level 7

Feral Instinct is unlocked for the Barbarian at Level 7, elevating your instincts to their peak. You gain immunity to being surprised and a +3 initiative bonus.
Though seemingly small, this feature is crucial to the best barbarian build bg3. It ensures that you won’t be caught off guard during your first turn, allowing you to act early in combat. This means you’ll be one of the first to initiate and start dealing damage right away. From there, you can focus on minimizing damage to yourself and your party by stunning or eliminating the highest-priority target.
Level 8

The Barbarian can select another feat at level 8, and we recommend Great Weapon Master in this case.
- Great Weapon Master feat: You can perform a second melee attack as a bonus action if a melee attack kills a creature or scores a critical hit. Attack rolls suffer a -5 penalty while using Heavy Weapons you are skilled with, but their damage rises by 10. A high-risk, high-reward achievement, but be prepared for severe damage.
The Great Weapon Master feat offers two key benefits for the best barbarian build bg3. Firstly, it allows you to deal +10 damage with a high-risk, high-reward ability, although it comes with a -5 attack roll penalty. This can drastically lower your chances of hitting, making it more of a gamble.
Secondly, the feat grants an additional opportunity for a critical hit or kill by using a bonus action. The real strength of this feat lies in the fact that you can land multiple attacks in a turn, increasing your chances for critical hits and kills. As a result, you should use your action to start combat and save your bonus action for a Great Weapon Master strike.
In this build, you should prioritize using your bonus action for Great Weapon Master attacks instead of Frenzied Strike or Enraged Throw, assuming you kill or critically strike a creature. This helps maintain your frenzy throughout the fight. Don’t forget to use your other bonus action attacks if you need to stun a target or if the critical hit effect doesn’t trigger.
Level 9

The Brutal Critical feature for the best barbarian build bg3 is unlocked at level 9. When you land a critical hit, you roll an additional damage die in addition to the regular extra critical dice. From this point forward, the gameplay remains largely the same, with the addition of passive advantages like Brutal Critical. As expected, this significantly boosts your damage output, making the Barbarian even stronger. Since it’s a passive feature, it requires no activation, further enhancing the build’s simplicity and effectiveness.
Level 10

The best barbarian build bg3 gains access to the action-based skill Intimidating Presence at level 10. This ability terrifies an enemy, inducing dreadful fear that prevents the target from being attacked again until it Long Rests, provided it resists the effect. While this skill causes terror and demands action, it isn’t a primary focus for this build. Typically, I rely on support classes for debuffing enemies, leaving this aspect to other roles in the party.
Level 11

There isn’t much new for the best barbarian build bg3 between levels 11 and 12. I recommend multiclassing into Fighter for the final two levels. At level 11, Barbarians gain Relentless Rage, a powerful ability similar to the Half-Orc passive Relentless Endurance. This feature allows you to stay at 1 health instead of dropping to 0 when you would normally be downed. While you miss out on a feat at level 12 to gain +2 Strength, you can temporarily boost your Strength to 21 or 27 by using Hill Giant potions.
If you decide to multiclass, Action Surge from Fighter is highly beneficial. This once-per-short-rest ability grants one additional combat action, which complements the Great Weapon Master and the Barbarian’s existing extra attack. If you’d rather not multiclass, you can still take the Ability Improvement +2 Strength at level 12 with the Barbarian.
- Second Wind: is a mediocre heal that is helpful early in the game. It can be obtained at Fighter level one. Although most potions work better than a bonus action, you can still use it.
- Great Weapon Fighting: A damage die is rerolled once when you roll a 1 or 2 for an attack with a two-handed melee weapon. This is a fantastic advantage that only fighters and Paladins possess. You gain a low damage die reroll, which greatly increases your potential for output.
Level 12

You can unlock the powerful Action Surge after two levels in Fighter. Its greatest advantage is that it doesn’t consume any resources to use, offering an extra action in each fight. While Action Surge can only be used once per encounter, it allows you to cast spells and recover during short rests.
With Great Weapon Master and Extra Attack, combining Action Surge with your Barbarian will significantly boost your attack power. If you also use a Potion of Haste or cast Haste on yourself, this effect is further amplified. Once you calculate all these benefits, you’ll see how much more devastating your best barbarian build bg3 can become!
- Attack two with Action Surge + extra attack = 4
- Attack one + extra attack = 2
- Great Weapon Master by critical strike = 7
- Attack three using Haste + extra attack = 6
With this build, the Barbarian at level 12 has an incredible amount of firepower. Once more, if you intend to play a standard Barbarian for all 12 levels, select the Alert feat, which facilitates going early, or Ability Improvement +2 Strength.
