The six core stats in Baldur’s Gate 3 that define a character’s potential are called ability scores. The game automatically assigns these stats to allies, without allowing for initial customization. However, for 100 gold, you can later modify their starting ability scores in your camp by speaking with the NPC Withers. This option is useful for optimizing the Karlach Build Bg3.

Best Karlach Build Bg3 Barbarian Level Progression
The game will automatically assign ability scores to companions, but you’ll want to adjust them for optimal performance. For 100 gold, you can modify her default class, ability scores, and skills by speaking with the NPC Withers in your camp. Follow the character-building steps outlined above to select the right ability scores and skills. Note that you cannot change her race. For the Karlach Build Bg3, use a two-handed weapon, preferably a greatsword, along with heavy armor or clothing. A powerful weapon, the Everburn Blade, can be obtained during the prologue.
Level 1
- Barbarian Mechanics
- Rage: When you’re furious, you may toss things, wield melee weapons, and perform additional damage. In addition, you have an Advantage on Strength checks and Saving Throws, as well as Resistance to physical damage. If you don’t assault an enemy or receive damage every turn, rage stops early. Spells cannot be cast or concentrated upon when furious.
- Unarmored Defense: Your Armor Class when you are not wearing any armor is 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Constitution modifier. You may benefit from this even if you wear a shield.
Unarmored Defense Explained | Best Karlach Build Bg3 Companion
If you don’t plan to wear medium armor, Unarmored Defense is helpful. You can remove Lae’zel’s armor and upgrade it to a higher Armor Class (AC) by equipping it with high Dexterity. Using “clothing” instead of armor offers the benefit of gear sets. As you progress, the game rewards you with clothing-based gear that grants the Wrath status effect, boosting melee damage. Taking risks with lower AC can lead to more hits, but some clothing sets offer strong damage. Start with medium or higher AC and test your survival. If successful, progress to meta-clothing sets.
The Barbarian’s core mechanic is Rage. On your first turn, use your bonus action to charge and strike. In the Karlach Build Bg3, always equip a ranged weapon to attack once every turn and keep Rage active. Use your bonus action to enter Rage and charge forward with a two-handed Greatsword or a bow for maximum impact.
Karlach Build Bg3 Priorities | battle master Fighter
Karlach is a powerful melee Barbarian early on in BG3, excelling with a Two-Handed Greatsword. Your initial goal is to find a ranged weapon, such as a Heavy Crossbow or Longbow, for support until you unlock better gear and armor. Additionally, obtaining Oil of Accuracy and Elixir of Hill Giant Strength provides substantial damage boosts, making Karlach an unstoppable force right from the start.

Karlach Build Bg3 Priorities is the following:
- Recruit Other Companions
- Complete Prologue
- Sell, Stock up, complete quest
- Reached Hollowed City/Druid Grove/Emerald grove
- Reach Underdark and Grymforge
- Unlock Withers, respec to proper ability score
- Progress to level 5
Level 2
You may access Dangerous Sense and Reckless Attack at level two.
- Dangerous Sense: When making dexterity-saving throws against surfaces, spells, and traps, you have the upper hand. This is only a passive application to your charcter..
- Reckless Attack: The Reckless Attack feature gives enemies the edge over you until your next turn in return for giving you the advantage on melee weapon attack rolls. This is meant to be employed against an opponent that you will either eliminate or avoid in your subsequent turn.
Your primary attack skill in the Karlach Build Bg3 is Reckless Attack. When you have the edge, you can roll two dice instead of one, with the game selecting the highest roll. This significantly boosts your damage, but be aware the enemy will also gain the same advantage against you.
At this stage in the game, your goal is to enter combat on your first turn, charge in, and use Rage as your bonus action. To maintain the Rage effect, you need to strike an enemy or take damage yourself. If you can’t reach a target on your first turn, ensure you’re equipped with a bow. For the majority of your attacks, rely on Reckless Attack to maximize your damage output.
Level 3
When you reach level three and choose a subclass, we recommend Berserker for the Karlach Build Bg3. It grants a powerful ranged damage ability and utilizes your bonus action effectively. At level 3, focus on the following:
- Extra Rage Charge
- Take Berserker Subclass
- Frenzied Strike: Use your equipped weapon to launch a melee attack as a bonus action.
- Frenzy: gives you the bonus ability to charge into a furious rage, which lets you attack with a melee weapon once every turn. Keep in mind flayer that once your rage subsides, this feature also causes one degree of tiredness.
- Enraged Throw: Throw a creature or item at a target to knock it Prone and deal Bludgeoning damage. Your throwing capacity is influenced by your strength. heavier items do more harm. The melee damage of a weapon is equal to its damage when thrown. Also, depending on your Strength, you do more damage.
- Searing Smite: 1d6 Searing Smite fire damage to a target takes 1d6 icon wiki guide for BG3 11d6 Every turn, it takes fire damage unless it makes a successful Constitution saving throw.. (Karlach Racial Unlock)
Berserker Karlach Build Bg3 Gameplay Explained
With the Karlach Build Bg3, at level 3, you can attack with Frenzied Strike and Enraged Throw using your bonus actions. Start by activating Frenzy (Rage) and charging into combat, either dealing ranged or melee damage. On your second turn, you can use Frenzy again, allowing you to attack with your action and bonus action. At levels 4 and 5, you’ll gain more attacks!
My favorite new skill is Enraged Throw, which can knock enemies prone or stun them. While the Karlach Barbarian excels in damage, it struggles against crowds. Using Enraged Throw strategically after a Reckless attack can help with crowd control. I carry daggers and spears to throw and retrieve weapons after combat.
The key is to use Frenzy to rush in with a reckless attack and follow up with a bonus action like Frenzied Strike or Enraged Throw. However, be cautious—using these bonus actions too often can cause you to lose Frenzy. It’s best to limit their use until you gain additional actions later.
Karlach Build Bg3 Zariel Tiefling Smite spells
Although typically used in devotion Paladin builds, this skill’s cumulative damage can still be useful in a Karlach Build Bg3. The downside is that it uses both an action and a bonus action, taking up your entire turn. However, if you have a high hit percentage and need that extra damage boost, it can be effective. In my Karlach Barbarian build, I usually avoid using this skill, but it remains available and can be used once during a long rest for free.
Level 4
Using the Ability Improvements Feat, add two points to Strength, boosting it to 18 by level four. This will help you deal consistent damage. At this point, we do not recommend the Great Weapon Master feat, as the Berserker Subclass Barbarian relies heavily on bonus actions like Frenzied Strike and Enraged Throw. Instead, focus on a straightforward stat boost. (Feat: Tavern Brawler (+1 Strength))
Between levels 8 and 12, you’ll gain another feat. Since we make great use of our bonus action and want to increase our chances of landing attacks early, we’ll choose Great Weapon Master at level 8.
Level 5
The Barbarian receives fast movement and extra attack at level five.
- Fast Movement: When wearing light armor, gaining a class feature boosts your movement speed by +5.
- Extra Attack feature: enabling you to use the Attack action throughout your turn to launch two attacks. This greatly increases your combat damage potential.
Level 5 Barbarians shine when combining Frenzied Strike and Extra Attack. This allows you to attack once with your action and once with your bonus action. To maximize your damage in a turn, you can use a Potion of Speed.
At this stage, the Barbarian becomes a powerhouse. On your first turn, use your bonus action to activate Rage/Frenzy and launch a Reckless attack. If successful, you’ll get another attack. Typically, you’ll want to apply bleeding damage with a secondary weapon skill like Lacerate. On your second turn, you can land two attacks: one Reckless and one bonus action strike, depending on range. That’s three attacks in total. Use a Potion of Speed to add two more attacks if the battle gets tough!
Karlach’s race also get another skill at this level as follows:
- Branding Smite: 2d6 radiant damage possibly marks your target with light, preventing it from turning Invisible.
This ability can help avoid invisibility and is often used in devotion paladin builds. However, its drawback for our build is that it requires two actions plus a bonus action, effectively ending our turn. Still, it can hit hard and prevent us from becoming invisible.
Best Karlach build BG3 multiclass
Karlach is a solid choice if you stick with the Barbarian class throughout your leveling. However, you can enhance her power with a BG3 Karlach Build multiclass if you’re playing on Honor Mode, the hardest difficulty. For this, consider a multiclass of four Rogue/Thief levels and three Fighter/Champion levels. If you’re aiming for a solo build to complete the Tactician solo, this route is ideal, though it can make the game more complex than necessary.
Level 6
At level 6 in Barbarian, you gain a second Rage charge and the Mindless Rage subclass feature. Your fury becomes overwhelming, and you are immune to fear and charm while raging. Calm Emotions won’t stop your rage, protecting you from crowd control effects and preventing damage or missing turns.
By now, you should be nearing the end of Act 1. Be sure to check vendors and restock supplies for camp and alchemy. Take note of top Act 1 items. Act 1 also offers permanent bonuses that are worth getting. Lastly, Grymforge contains powerful weapons and Adamantine heavy armor (BG3 best armor), which will carry you well into Act 3. Make sure to gather Mithral, Mould, and Craft items before progressing to Act 2, as you won’t be able to return.
Level 7
Feral Instinct is unlocked for the Barbarian at level 7. With this, Karlach gains immunity to being surprised and a +3 bonus to initiative. This ensures she will act early in combat, often going first in the initial round. With this advantage, you can focus on minimizing damage to yourself and your team by either stunning or eliminating the highest-priority targets right away.
Level 8
At level 8, the Barbarian can select another feat, and we recommend Great Weapon Master for this Karlach Build BG3. This feat allows you to make a second melee attack as a bonus action if you score a critical hit or kill a creature. While using heavy weapons, attack rolls suffer a -5 penalty, but the damage increases by 10. This feat offers high-risk, high-reward potential for massive damage.
The Great Weapon Master feat benefits you in two ways. First, it adds 10 damage with a -5 penalty to attack rolls, which can drastically reduce your hit chances, but its damage boost is significant. You can disable the penalty view in your toolbar’s Passive section to see the normal hit percentage.
Second, this feat grants you a bonus action for another opportunity to score a critical hit or kill. The power of this feat lies in the ability to make multiple attacks in a turn, increasing your chances of landing critical hits and kills. Therefore, start combat with your main action, and save your bonus action for a Great Weapon Master attack.
Assuming you kill or critically strike a target, switch to using your bonus action for Great Weapon Master instead of Frenzied Strike or Enraged Throw to maintain your frenzy. But remember, use the other bonus action attacks if you need to stun a target or don’t get the desired effect.
Level 9
At level 9, the Barbarian gains Brutal Critical, a class feature that adds an additional damage die to critical hits, on top of the usual extra critical dice. Beyond this point, the gameplay remains mostly unchanged, aside from passive benefits like Brutal Critical. As expected, this increases Karlach’s damage output significantly, providing a passive advantage without needing activation. This feature makes the Barbarian stronger and easier to use, boosting both your offensive capabilities and overall effectiveness in combat in the Karlach Build BG3.
Level 10
At level 10, the Barbarian gains the action-based skill Intimidating Presence. This ability terrifies an enemy, inducing fear that prevents them from being attacked again until after a Long Rest, if they resist the effect. While this can be useful, it has a drawback: it only causes fear and requires an action. Typically, I prefer using support classes for debuffing targets, but in the Karlach Build BG3, this skill can still be a useful tool for crowd control when necessary.
Level 11
There is little progression for the Barbarian between levels 11 and 12. For the Karlach Build BG3, I recommend multiclassing into Fighter for the final two levels. At level 11, Barbarians gain Relentless Rage, which is similar to the Half-Orc’s Relentless Endurance. Instead of dropping to 0 health, you remain at 1 HP. However, you lose out on the opportunity for a feat at level 12, which could provide a +2 Strength increase.
The main reason I suggest Karlach’s best multiclass build BG3 is for Action Surge, which grants an additional action once per short rest. While Relentless Rage and +2 Strength are valuable, the extra attack from Great Weapon Master and Action Surge can greatly enhance her combat effectiveness. If you prefer not to multiclass, you can instead opt for the Ability Improvement feat (+2 Strength) at level 12.
- Second Wind: This is a mediocre heal that might be handy early in the game and can be acquired at Fighter level one. Although most potions work better than a bonus action, you can still use it.
- Great Weapon Fighting Style: A damage die is rerolled once when you roll a 1 or 2 for an attack with a two-handed melee weapon. This is a fantastic advantage that only fighters and Paladins possess. You gain a low damage die reroll, which greatly increases your potential for output.
Level 12
You can unlock the powerful Action Surge after two levels in Fighter. Its greatest strength lies in the fact that it doesn’t require any resources to use, even when granting an extra action. While Action Surge can only be used once per battle, it allows you to cast spells and recover during a short rest.
With Great Weapon Master and Extra Attack already in place, Karlach Build BG3 becomes even more potent when combined with Action Surge. This combination lets her double her attack power. Additionally, using a Potion of Haste or casting Haste on her can further amplify this strategy.
Advertisement- Attack two (Action Surge) + extra attack = 4
- Attack one + extra attack = 2
- Great Weapon Master (critical strike) = 7
- Attack three (Haste) + extra attack = 6
Karlach Build BG3 reaches incredible firepower at level 12 with this setup. If you choose to stay exclusively in the Barbarian class for all 12 levels, you can boost your early game with the Alert feat or Ability Improvement +2 Strength.
