Paladin Spell Mechanics
Here are a list of the Best Paladin Build Bg3 Mechanics:
- Spell Slots: will consume up your spell slots, which are a limited supply that must be refilled by a long rest.
- Cantrips: are similar to spells, except they don’t take up any spell slots and you can cast them indefinitely.
- Concentration: is a spell mechanic that some spells in Baldurs Gate 3 need to preserve and keep their effectiveness functioning.
- Prepared Spells: a mechanic of the Paladin that lets you switch spells out before a combat.
In general, Paladin spellcasting is less impactful compared to other classes and builds. However, the Divine Smite mechanic, which consumes spell slots, allows for massive burst damage. Players should prioritize reserving spell slots for Divine Smite unless crowd control, healing, or buffs are essential. This strategy proves especially effective during challenges like the Faith Leap Trial BG3, where efficient resource management is key.

bg3 best paladin build Level Progression
Level 1
At first level, players should use the character creator to select the optimal mix of race, background, skills, and abilities, focusing on Charisma and Strength. Choose the Vengeance subclass for this build. By level two, you’ll unlock most of your spells, but focus on weapon damage early on. Your goal is to find heavy armor and a two-handed weapon. If you don’t plan to use Lae’zel, you can acquire her medium armor early. Once you start attacking, things get exciting with the Best Paladin Build BG3 at level 2.
level 1 Best Paladin Build Bg3 spells
- Lay on Hands: Apply your blessed touch to heal a creature of all illnesses and toxins. Single-target melee either cures sickness or uses action to heal. Although it uses Oath Charges, this heal works well.
- Divine Sense: Get the upper hand while attack Rolls against fiends, undead, and celestials. Using a bonus action can be applied with an action-costing attack.
- Channeled Oath Charges: Spell and ability casting is possible with this Paladin-only resource. Short rest is necessary to recover the three oath skills that it is used for.
- Oath of Vengeance Tenets: This isn’t a mechanic portion, just an oath you need to maintain. If you break the oath, you can unlock a new subclass, Oathbreaker.
- Inquisitor’s Might: Weapon strikes from you or an ally can daze enemies for one turn in addition to dealing an extra 2 radiant damages. This is a useful Channeled Oath skill that has the potential to stun and do some additional damage.
Getting Started with the Game | Best Paladin Build Bg3 Oathbreaker
In the early stages of the Best Paladin Build BG3, the Vengeance Paladin will have impressive mobility. To maximize this, equip a back-bar ranged weapon like Lae’zel’s Heavy Crossbow. This allows you to deal damage before getting closer to the enemy. At level 5, you’ll unlock Misty Step, greatly enhancing your mobility and power. Additionally, consider using Oil of Accuracy and Elixir of Hill Giant Strength for huge damage boosts, making your Paladin feel much stronger.

Tips for starting the Baldur’s Gate 3 game:
- Recruit Companions
- Complete Prologue
- Reached Hollowed City/Druid Grove
- Unlock Withers, respec companions
- Sell, Stock up, complete quest
- Reach Underdark and Grymforged
- Progress to level 5
Level 2
level 2 Paladin spells, choose a fighting style, and Divine Smite
- Great Weapon Fighting: passive ability that allows you to reroll damage dies once when you assault with a two-handed melee weapon and roll a 1 or 2. This reduces low-damage rolls and maintains high damage, particularly while using a two-handed weapon like a greatsword.
- Divine Smite: relies on spell slot along with weapon strike and hits. Apply automatically, solely in response to critical hits, or display as a pop-up box using the reactions menu. Use caution at first when using this too frequently. At this low level, you will rapidly run out of spell slots and will need to either rest or limit your attacks to melee.
- Spells Selection
- Thunderous Smite: As you hit, your weapon resounds like thunder, driving your victim three meters away and maybe knocking it Prone. For stuns, this strike can function similarly to Crowd Control. This is the one to employ when you need to shock a strong opponent. The ideal use is to start a fight while moving stealthily.
- Searing Smite: Your weapon marks the victim with Searing Smite and deals an additional 1d6 Fire damage. When using Searing Smite, a target sustains 1d6 Fire damage each turn unless it makes a successful Constitution saving throw. This is your powerful single-target spell with a fire effect that does damage gradually. Still, as it uses an additional bonus action on top of an action, try to avoid using it.
- Divine Favor: You also deliver an extra 1d4 Radiant Damage with your weapon attacks. This increases the damage of our weapon assaults, but it also takes up a spell slot that might be used up quickly in the game.
- Shield of Faith: Cast a shimmering magic field around a creature to raise its Armour Class by two. This is best utilized before to encounters where you anticipate taking the most damage, as it uses a bonus action and demands concentration.
- Cure Wounds: A creature can be healed by touch. Generally, unless you are unable to perform Lay on Hands, do not use this spell.
It’s important to be cautious when using spells in the Best Paladin Build BG3. When paired with Thunderous Smite or basic weapon attacks, Improved Divine Smite can trigger (using an additional spell slot) and deal extra damage. By using a spell slot, you can add extra damage when landing a Critical Strike with a weapon. The Paladin’s reliance on spell slots makes regular rest crucial, so use them sparingly. While spells like Blessed and Shield of Faith are powerful, they can be cast by a Cleric in your party.
Level 3
The Paladin will choose their subclass, Vengence, at level 3. Also, this level opens Divine Health, a further level 1 spell slot, and subclass features.
- Abjure Enemy: Take on an opponent. They can’t move and will be easy to attack. On this Saving Throw, fiends and the undead are at a disadvantage. very useful against fiends.
- Gain Divine Health: keeps the illness from harming you.
- Receives Bane: A -1d4 penalty is applied to Attack Rolls and Saving Throws for up to three creatures. Useless in this build, wasting a spell slot.
- Vow of Enmity: Acquire an edge on attack rolls against an opponent. Using a niche to defeat targeted enemies.
- Command: Give the order for a creature to drop its weapon, flee, move closer, freeze, or drop the ground. You can employ this long-range crowd control ability.
- Receives Hunter’s Mark: Declare a creature as your target so that each time you strike it with a weapon attack, you will deal an extra 1d6 Slashing Damage. You can brand a different creature without using up more spell slots if the target dies before the spell expires. Excellent single-target debuff spell that you can reapply for free with a bonus action following a kill.
Oath of Vengeance Best Paladin subclass BG3 Gameplay
The Best Paladin Build BG3 subclass greatly expands your range of spells, abilities, and actions. The key is using bonus actions and actions wisely each turn. At this level, I rarely use Searing or Thunderous Smite, as they consume both bonus and action, which is costly. Instead, I typically use Divine Favor or Shield of Faith to buff in the first round before moving in for a melee attack. After that, I prioritize my next action. Command is a great choice for a stun, but I’ll use my spell slots for Searing Smite if I need to eliminate a target quickly.
The Paladin can be complex even at level 3. First, buff, then focus on burst damage. On your third turn, assess the needs of your group—crowd control, healing, burst, etc. Repeat this strategy as the game progresses. The more spell slots you gain, the easier and more efficient it becomes. Before your turn ends, check if you have any bonus actions left to use. If not, consider using Hunter’s Mark, Divine Favor, or Shield of Faith if you have any spell slots available.
Level 4
At level four in the Best Paladin Build BG3, you’ll need to choose between gaining a feat or raising your ability score, such as Strength. While feats offer great benefits, you’ll miss out on ability score improvements. The easiest and quickest way to enhance your character is by increasing your primary stat, Strength, to 18. For this reason, choose the ability improvement option to add +2 to Strength.
At level 8, we will take Great Weapon Master, followed by an additional +2 to Strength at level 12, the maximum level in Baldur’s Gate 3. This approach keeps our build simple and allows us to hit harder with a higher probability using a melee weapon. If you have one more spell slot available, I recommend taking Protect from Evil and Good for added defense.
Protection from Good and Evil: Defend an ally from the assaults and abilities of celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead, as well as from aberrations. These monsters cannot possess, charm, or frighten the target, and they are at a disadvantage when they assault it. This spell is exclusive to this build and is not frequently used. It helps especially in fights if your character is charmed and crowd-controlled from the first turn on. If not, consider this a flex with a different talent you find more interesting.
- Level 4 Paladin Prepared Spells: Searing Smite, Thunderous Smite, Shield of Faith, Divine Favour, Cure Wounds, Command, Protection from Evil and Good.
Level 5
The Paladin and Oath of Vengeance subclasses unlock a great deal at level 5. Two subclass spells, greater attack, and two additional spell slots.
- Extra Attack: One action can be used to launch two attacks. This lets you do massive single target damage in a pure turn when paired with Improved Divine Smite and the extra spell slots.
- Branding Smite: Possibly marks your target with light to keep it from becoming invisible while doing 2d6 radiant damage. Another hard-hitting Smite though I prefer to save spell slots.
At level 5 in the Best Paladin Build BG3, both your offensive and defensive capabilities significantly improve. Extra Attack allows you to make two attacks per turn, and you can use Improved Divine Smite on each one. Combine this with a Potion of Speed or the Haste spell for even more action potential. By level 8, you’ll use your extra action to either launch another attack or apply debuffs. The Vengeance subclass gives you two free spells, with Misty Step being the top choice. This spell only requires a bonus action, providing excellent mobility. Now, you can close the distance and charge in with insane mobility and massive single-target damage.
At this stage, you’ll feel incredibly strong. With Misty Step’s bonus action mobility and the ability to deal massive damage with Smite, you’re optimizing buffs and debuffs. The current challenges are managing spell slots and maximizing Divine Smite reactions for huge damage, but continuous rest is key. Avoid venturing too far without conserving your spell slots.
Level 6
The Paladin gains access to one additional prepared spell at level six, for a total of nine.
- Magic Weapon: Give a weapon arcane energy. The weapon gains a +1 boost to Attack and Damage Rolls when it turns magical. A high-level spell slot and concentration are given up in exchange for this respectable damage buff. A more good spell to add to our arsenal.
- Aura of Protection: A benefit to saving throws equal to your Charisma modifier is applied to you and your close allies. To receive a boost that stacks with other auras, passively activate this.
At this stage in the Best Paladin Build BG3, you’re nearly ready to leave Act 1. Stock up on supplies for camp and alchemy, and make sure to visit vendors. Explore top Act 1 items as well, as they offer valuable resources. In Act 1, you can also earn permanent bonuses to enhance your build. Additionally, Grymforge is crucial for gearing up, with his powerful Adamantine armor and weaponry that can carry you through Act 3. Since you can’t return to Act 2 (where Moonrise Tower is located), consider spending extra time gathering Mithral, Mould, and Craft materials before moving forward.
Level 7
At Level 7, the Paladin Unlocks the following:
- Lesser Restoration: Heal a creature from disease, poisoning, blindness, or paralysis. used in rare instances, but when you require an ally who is gravely paralyzed to be able to take a turn they are not able to move.
- Relentless Avenger: On your subsequent turn, your movement speed will increase by 4.5 meters if you use an Opportunity Attack on an enemy.
- Level 7 Paladin Prepared Spells: Searing Smite, Thunderous Smite, Shield of Faith, Divine Favour, Cure Wounds, Command, Protection from Evil and Good, Branding Smite, Magic Weapon, Lessor Restoration.
Level 8
The Paladin can select a feat or ability improvement at level 8, and we advise picking Great Weapon Master.
- Great Weapon Master Feat: You can perform a second melee attack as a bonus action if a melee attack kills a creature or scores a critical hit. Attack rolls lose a -5 penalty while using Heavy Weapons you are skilled with, but their damage rises by 10.
- Compelled Duel: Force an enemy to launch an assault just at you. It is incapable of attacking other creatures. If other allies are weak, you can use another specialized spell to assist you absorb damage. Think of this as a flex skill.
The Great Weapon Master feat benefits you in two key ways for the Best Paladin Build BG3. First, it can add 10 damage with a high-risk, high-reward ability, but there’s a -5 penalty to your attack roll. This significantly lowers your chances of hitting, but you can disable this in the Passive area of your toolbar to see your normal percentage.
Additionally, you can use a bonus action to increase your chances of landing a critical hit or securing a kill with this feat. The real power of this feat lies in getting multiple critical hits and kills with this build, especially with multiple attacks in a turn. It’s best to use your action to initiate combat and save your bonus action for a Great Weapon Master strike.
best Weapon Master guide
You now possess the god-tier Great Weapon Master at level 8, along with sufficient strength to utilize it. After being buffed, this is how you want your turn to proceed:
- Action Two Attack: goal kill target or critical strike (proc Divine Smite)
- Action One Attack: goal kill target or critical strike
- Proc Great Weapon Master: from a critical hit or kill, then apply the bonus action to launch another attack (Proc Divine Smite).
Given that the bonus action can trigger Great Weapon Master, this offers a lot of attacks without relying on a specific Smite. This doesn’t eliminate the use of Branding, Thunderous, or Searing Smite but provides more options thanks to the utility of your bonus action.
You can further enhance this by casting Haste on yourself or using a Potion of Speed. This gives you two additional attacks, an extra action, and possibly two more divine strikes. With this setup, the Paladin becomes nearly unstoppable in a single round. To trigger Great Weapon Master, use primary melee attacks on the second turn after buffing with your bonus action in the first. When you need to dish out significant damage, use your spell slots and Smites. Focus less on healing and use Misty Step to increase mobility.
Level 9
Level 9 Oath of the Vengeance Paladin opens up two Level 3 Spell Slots and two spells exclusive to a certain subclass.
- Protection from Energy: This can save your life in extremely particular fights with significant single-focus aspects, but most of our level 3 spells are meant to be used with Smite or Elemental Weapons. If not, classify this as a utility skill. (subclass spell)
- Haste: To become Hastened, target an ally or yourself. The creature can perform one extra action each turn, gets a +2 boost to Armor Class, and has an advantage on Dexterity Saving Throws. Its Movement Speed is also doubled. Once the illness passes, the creature turns lethargic. Because it boosts actions, this is one of the finest spells in the game. The drawback of employing it is that the Paladin must act and devote a valuable level 3 spell slot. (subclass spell)
- Blinding Smite: +3d8 radiant damage with a chance to blind your opponent. This spell is your huge nuke since it combines Smite and Blind, making it essential and our go-to level 3 spell.
- Elemental Weapon: Give a weapon elemental power. It deals an extra 1d4 damage of your choosing and gains a +1 bonus to Attack Rolls. Think of this as an improved Divine Favor that increases attack rolls by +1. The drawback is that it requires a level 3 spell slot and an action. Expect much more damage if you use this to pre-buff before a fight.
You now have even more Best Paladin Build Bg3 weapons at your disposal at this level. Most of the other spells will be used in specialized situations. Blinding Smite provides a powerful counter against other martial weapon users, applying the Blind debuff along with 3d8 radiant damage. Keep your strategy simple by using your utility, crowd control, and off-healing when necessary.
Level 10
In Baldur’s Gate 3, the level 10 Paladin has access to the following:
- Lay on Hands Charge
- Revivify: Revive a companion. With one hit point, they come back to life. This can be helpful for long-range recovery, although normally you can utilize the help function or throw potions.
- Aura of Courage: No one can frighten you or any allies that are close by. You lose the aura if you go unconscious.
- Level 10 Paladin Prepared Spells: Searing Smite, Thunderous Smite, Shield of Faith, Divine Favour, Cure Wounds, Command, Protection from Evil and Good, Branding Smite, Magic Weapon, Lessor Restoration, Blinding Smite, Elemental Weapon, Revive.
Level 11
At level 11, the Best Paladin Build Bg3 only gains an additional spell and another level 3 spell slot. Taking two levels in Fighter grants you the powerful Action Surge skill and a passive +1 Armor Class (AC) when wearing armor. If you stick with Paladin, you can choose a different spell at this level and a +2 Strength feat at level 12. However, for a significant boost to your action potential and damage, I recommend going two levels into Fighter.
It’s fantastic to have 20 strength with another ability boost. But depending on how you use them, Hill Giant potions 21 and 27 give you even more.
- Second Wind: This is a middling heal that might be handy early in the game and can be acquired at Fighter level one. Although most potions work better than a bonus action, you can still use it.
- Defence Fighting Style: You get a +1 increase to AC when you wear armor. At level 1, this is a passive advantage that will aid in survival.
Level 12
After two levels in Fighter, you unlock the incredible Action Surge, which provides an extra action without using any resources. Although you can only use it once per fight, it grants extra casting, attacks, and movement. This boosts your offensive potential significantly.
When combined with your Paladin’s Extra Attack, Action Surge allows you to deal double the hits. Add a Potion of Haste or cast Haste on yourself, and you get even more actions. This setup maximizes your damage output, making you a formidable force in combat with the Best Paladin Build Bg3.
- Attack two (using Action Surge) + extra attack = 4
- Attack one + extra attack = 2
- Great Weapon Master (using critical strike) + bonus action = 7
- Attack three (using Haste) + extra attack = 6
With this combination, the Paladin at level 12 has an incredible amount of firepower. Once more, if you wish to play a standard Paladin for all 12 levels, choose the Alert feat, which facilitates going early, or ability improvement +2 strength.
Best Paladin Oath of Vengeance Build in Baldur’s Gate 3
For the Best Paladin Build Bg3, we recommend a balanced party with companions who complement your Paladin’s abilities. Your character should focus on charging in at close range while providing support, dealing ranged damage, or using stealth attacks. Having two or three melee characters can make close-quarters combat difficult.
- Shadowheart Cleric: buffs, healing, and crowd control.
- Gale Wizard: range magic damage, area damage, and crowd control.
- Astarion Rogue: burst damage, lockpicking, and range if needed.
Consider the skills and abilities of your allies, as they impact dialogue, exploration, and combat. A well-rounded party, featuring a tank, healer, melee DPS, and ranged DPS, is ideal for this build. Experiment with different combinations and refer to the Best Baldur’s Gate 3 Paladin Oath of Vengeance Build Guide to find what works best for you.

Elden Ring or Baldur’s Gate 3?
It’s rare for an RPG to completely redefine the genre, especially not two games in less than a year. Elden Ring, the latest addition to the Soulsborne series, immediately caught players off guard.
Baldur’s Gate 3, the newest installment in the Dungeons & Dragons video game franchise, has also revolutionized party dynamics in role-playing games. Both games are incredibly rewarding and well worth your time, even without any DLC.
